Both ways you mentioned are equally correct. The way you've said it for the phrase, it's like saying "I started ten years back."

With the use of hace and time, a construction I found odd is desde hace.

- Vivo acá desde hace 10 años.

- I've been living here since 10 years ago.

I really like learning variations. As a foreign speaker of Spanish, I feel like I'm always saying the same things in the same ways.

I suppose this variety if meanings is common to every language. We will study till we are dead. Can't think of better way to spend my life, learning.
