Hmmm, I'm Spanish and I never heard the word "mecate".

However, it exists and it's used on Central America. It comes from the nahuas.

I have heard it here in Southern California. They all laugh when I say it maybe because I a Gringo who speaks Spanish poorly.

As Ignazio said, I come from Argentina, and I don't think I've ever heard the word "mecate", but it definitely sounds like a mexican word.
I would say something like "Mi corazón late como loco."
Notice that the word "corazón" takes an accent mark over the last "o".

PS. It's funny, but I'm not the same Ignazio as the one from the first post. It seems like many people named Igna_io come here. LOL!
